What do I really need?

Posted on 2/10/2009 by Denise

If you missed it the other week, Alyssa from KingdomFirstMom.com and I did a Blog Talk Radio show about raising a baby on a budget.  We had a special guest, Angie from BabyCheapskate.com and I’ve been thinking about some of the things she said.  Of course, one question several people wanted to know is, what is necessary when preparing for a baby and what is just not useful at all.  Angie’s answer was very simple: that it varies for everyone.

One example that I brought up during the show was that many people had told me not to waste my money on a highchair, but to instead by one of those booster-type highchairs that straps to a regular dining chair.  Not only would it be more economical but it is also space saving.  However, this tip doesn’t work for me because of the type of chairs I have.  They are cloth Parsons chairs and they have arms so the booster highchair seat won’t strap to it comfortably and I don’t want the cloth ruined by a messy eater!  So, what works for one may not work for another.

Another example that was given was that some moms say they couldn’t live without their baby’s swing and another mom says their baby never liked it.  Angie urged our listeners not to worry about purchasing every little thing and to let their baby’s personality determine what was necessary.  One way to do this is to borrow an expensive item before purchasing one of your own to determine if you’ll really use it or not.

One item that my husband and I have decided not to purchase is a bassinet.  Some of our close friends, however, have loved theirs.  We intend on starting our baby in his crib.  We think it will work for us and one reason being is that I am lucky enough to have a long maternity leave.  I have worked in the same school district for six years and during that time I haven’t used hardly any sick leave.  So, all that banked time is really going to pay off!  I will get to spend nearly five months at home with my new bundle of joy.  While I know that having my baby sleep in his own crib will mean that I have to pry myself out of the bed at ungodly hours and nurse him while I’m still half asleep I also have the luxury of not having to get up and get ready to go to work the next morning.  Of course, like any new mom, I have a plan b.  I am not even going to pretend like I know all the answers or all the right ways to do something.  What we think will work and what will actually work may be quite different.  We received a pack and play for a shower gift.  This is an item we registered for because my dad will be watching our baby boy part time when I return to work on a part time basis.  We plan to leave this item at my mom and dad’s house so that he’ll have a place to contain him for play and for naps.  This pack and play also has a bassinet feature.  So, if “plan A” doesn’t work out then we can always use the pack and play as our bassinet instead of purchasing another item.

As a frugal mama, I am always on the look out for things that can be reused or repurposed.  This is another great way to get more bang for your buck!

  • Love this post! The baby shower I had with my 2nd son was so much fun because we made it a "diaper shower", which is where guests bring diapers or wipes instead of other baby items as gifts. I have a picture of the "diaper cake" my mom made and more info on in this post: http://savingcentswithsense.blogspot.com/2009/02/good-cents-for-moms-saving-with-baby.html

  • I had an epidural with my first delivery, and I loved it. I was able to really enjoy the whole process of the birth. With my second I was worried about not being able to get the epidural in time (because it was the middle of the night and I had to wait for the doctors to all get there), so they offered me an alternative. I agreed to take alternative (which I think they may have put into my iv), but it was a HORRIBLE decision. I don't remember what the medicine was, but it made me feel very sick. The room was spinning, and I felt nausiated until it wore off- not to mention that it didn't do anything to ease the contractions.

  • I had my first (a baby boy) about 16 months ago and believe it or not, we never had to use bibs or spit up cloths, yet we got SO many packages of each! I agree, you definitely have to let your baby "tell" you what he/she likes. The swing saved our lives, but only up until about 4 months or so. In response to asking about car seats that hook to strollers, I don't recall what they are called, but I do know that you can find them at Toys-r-us, maybe even at Wal-Mart. We received a Winnie The Pooh one and it worked out well; however, we never used the car seat with it - it was actually better for a "carrier" for doctor's appointments and things like that. In my opinion (and please, this is just my personal opinion), the car seats that come with strollers don't look very safe to me. We never used it in the car, I highly recommend Eddie Bauer brand, our son is now 16 months old, forward facing and he is able to use it for many more months!

  • Am looking for a car seatr/stroller that the car seat hooks to the stroller for tiny ones and the stroller part can turn into a small bed. I remember seeing one but can't remember what it is called. Any help would be wonderful.!!!!!!!

  • I completely agree with everything you said. We had a small apartment so we also chose to just use a pack and play. It worked for us until I could stomach spending a night more than two feet away from my baby. ;)

  • Hi, this is a great site. I wish I had found it before I started having kids. I bought and borrowed alot of my newborn items and justified the buying by the borrowing and also the fact that we wanted at least 3 kids and figured they would get alot of use. I also loan the items out to friends. I discovered garage sales last year and bought many of our outdoor toys that way for super cheap. I also use craigslist.

  • As a mom with a 3 year-old, I remember that I was always going through baby wipes and diapers so quickly. Also, it's good to stock pile regular sized wash clothes, instead of the baby size. We only got a few months use out of the baby sized one's, and they were so thin too. Also, I would reccommend stock piling pacifiers, after you know which one your child likes. You never know when you'll accidentally loose their favorite binky in their room, or when you're out and about. Changing pads or towels are another good item to have lots of. Thanks!

  • I go to the Just Between Friends sale in Dallas, TX and find amazing deals. You can find anything you need for your baby thorugh pre-teen at great prices. Ifyou are looking for baby equipment (strollers, high chairs, etc) they have a huge selection and you can buy one for you and one to keep at grandma's house. You have to check it out!!! www.jbfsale.com

  • Thanks for sharing the tips. I have six kids so saving is HUGE for me. I get name brand items in mint condition at the Just Between Friends Children's & Maternity Consignment Sale in Sacramento, California. Check out www.jbfsale.com for other locations. I resell what they outgrow and use the profits to purchase what they need for next season. I always purchase two sizes up so they never grow out of their stuff before the next sale comes. JBF runs two sales a year, one in Spring and one in Fall. I recycle the kid's toys too, so it is like Christmas twice a year when the JBF sale comes around. My kids take good care of their stuff because they know they will be able to trade it up for something else if they keep it looking like new. That's a good lesson for them. The Sacramento sale is coming in March and I can hardly wait!

  • i have a 2 1/2 month old little girl. we used a pack n play for the first month and it worked great for us! we kept it in our room, but i soon found out she did sleep better in her crib in her own room. but it served the purpose for us for a few weeks.

  • We have twins and bought a lot of the big items used at our twin club sale. We ended up with two used swings, plus a travel swing, because they loved them and had reflux, so ended up napping in them. They also slept in the bassinet of our pack-n-play for the first couple of months. It worked great.

Amy on 2/12/2009 at 2:28 PM
  • just delivered twins, love your blogs!!

  • This may sound silly, but I kept the colorful plastic links for toys everywhere; the car, diaper bag, grandmas..... My twins loved them, with or without the toys attached. The links made noise when they got excited and somehow provided a lot of excitement!

  • We saved all of our things from the 1st daughter for the 2nd. It just made sense being as they are only 16 months apart. After our 5 year old was finished with it, we gave most of it away. Our 18 month old didn't have all the things that the other 2 did, but she was not left out. We borrowed anything and everything we could. The P-n-P really came in handy with trying to keep the older sisters from playing "mommy" when I was trying to cook or clean. I would suggest trying to borrow from friends versus buying from thrift or yard sales. When you do this, you are more likely to get something that is not broken and is a lot more safe. Remember that car seats do have a life span, so be careful. While some will tell you not to worry with the infant car seat that can be taken in and out of the car with a snap, I would suggest getting it. Especially if you have other children. At least when the infant is in the seat, getting in and out of the car, up and down steps and many more things are a lot easier. We lived upstairs when the infant was brought home. I had a heart attack every time we left the house watching the older 2 walk down the steps.

  • We used our pack and play (with the attachment that makes it a bassinet) in our room with my daughter and it worked great. And it's true, what works for one, doesn't necessarily work for another - even two babies within the same family! I used the swing ALOT for our son, but barely at all for our daughter, since she didn't like it much. Someone gave us a Jumparoo when we had our son, yet he didn't like it, but now our daughter is a jumping fool in it. :) It's hard to know what a baby will like until the baby has arrived, and second hand or borrowed is DEFINITELY the way to go, especially for some items that you won't use for very long.

  • We started my son in his crib the first night we were home. It worked out very well for us. I am a stay-at-home mom and my husband had to get up every morning and get to work. I didn't mind stumbling across the hall at 2am very much and I didn't disturb my husband who couldn't sneak naps in the next day. We are pregnant with #2 and plan to start this one out in the crib as well.

  • I used the bassinet feature on the pack & play & put it in our room for the first month or so with our first baby. Now, with the second one, I bought a bassinet at a garage sale & plan to use that down stairs & keep the pack & play upstairs. I think a bouncy seat is a must. Most kids love them (although my son hated the vibrating feature).

  • I'm way past the baby years, but I've found, as a grandparent, the pack and plays to be great! I keep one here for visiting grandkids, and bought each of my expecting kids one to have at their place or for when traveling. Paid for itself many times over...actually the one I have here I got on freecycle so it was FREE!!!! I also like the boosters, as I'm starting to have as much baby gear as I did when my kids were little and I don't want the hassle of storing big clunking items anymore. I keep the toys in a bin in the garage and take that out when the kids come. I also have a bouncy seat and a fold up activity seat for nonwalkers to keep them entertained. THey sure do have nice stuff these days compared to when I raised my own.

  • Here is our advice, after having our 2 babies. Like you said: every baby is different! What one baby LOVED, the second one does not, and vice versa. Like the bouncy, the exersaucer, pack n play etc. We received many hand me downs, for which we are grateful. We needed to make sure they were still safe, like the crib. I guess my funny advice is not to feel too bad if you have something that your baby ends up NOT liking. Your next baby might really enjoy it!

  • I thought we would use the pack-n-play for naps, but we are lucky if our baby even takes naps! She just never liked the p-n-p once she got over about 1 month old. I really really want to win the Popaplay! I like this blog and the "Cent"sible Sawyer" too!

  • I would like to enter the baby contest.

Jeanette on 2/10/2009 at 8:10 PM
  • Every baby is different! :) My first was a sickly baby. We had a gorgeous white bassinet that didn't get used. She slept anywhere we could get her to stay asleep. Whether it be her car seat, swing, vibrating bouncy seat or my arms. My second slept in the crib from day one, kinda. For about a month or so she slept in her infant car seat sitting in the crib. She was 3 wks early and couldn't sleep unless she was in a more enclosed space. It worked and she was a good sleeper and still is! ~Amber~

Amber on 2/10/2009 at 7:26 PM
  • We used the pack and play bassinet feature with our first and it was great. We are now using it with our second child... why buy a bassinet when the pack and play has one built in? :) Plus the vibrating feature is great for the middle of the night when you just want them to go back to sleep.

Jennifer on 2/10/2009 at 5:27 PM
  • I have 4 kids, and I haven't had a bassinet for any of them. The crib works perfectly for us. I agree with the commenter who said to buy one thing to put baby down in (like a swing or bouncy seat), however, I've found that even just using the infant carseat to set baby in instead of a bouncy seat works well. It's in the house anyway (since in snaps into the car base), so you might as well use it! :-)

Jessica on 2/10/2009 at 4:18 PM
  • I loved the basinette we had, but when our son outgrew it it was really had to get him into his crib. He hated it! We hardly ever used it and he was in a twin bed before he was one. I think that our next baby we will try to start in the crib earlier.

Laura on 2/10/2009 at 3:54 PM
  • For a summer baby, as far as clothing goes you really don't need much. A few sleepers, shirts, a couple nice outfits. Cloth diapering will save you tons, as well and the resale value when your finished using them is pretty high. Breastfeeding will cost you nothing, but give your baby everything! This will also eliminate the need to buy formula, bottles, nipples, bottle brushes and all that other unnecessary stuff. We also co-sleep with our children until they are two (usually night-weaned). A lot of moms find that purchasing one crib, that will turn into a full size bed later is a great buy. But we just bought one that converted to a toddler bed later. We have it set up like a side car to my side of the bed for easy night nursing. As far as car seats, some feel its a waste to buy the infant seat and (check the weight/height min.) some babies fit in a convertible car seat right out of the hospital. You can't, however take the whole seat/baby with you if you chose this option though. Britax is the safest, but cheaper ones that are safe do exist. Strollers, I would invest a little more in, since you want to use them longer. I would also advocate a sling or some type of infant carrier that you wear. Babies love them and they help with fussiness a bunch :) Best of luck to you!

  • You mentioned borrowing something you would like to try from a friend, but if you can do that you can usually find the item your looking for at a yard sale for a reasonable price.

Nanci on 2/10/2009 at 2:26 PM
  • We just used the crib for our first son (2 1/2) and didn't seem to have any problems, although I did get tired of going into his room to nurse at night. I have since learned that husbands are good for getting the baby and bringing them to you to nurse and then bringing them back to the crib :) With our second son (4 months) we got a hand-me-down bassinet which I have enjoyed. He is outgrowing it now, but we are delaying the switch since the two boys will be sharing a room. We also have a pack 'n play which we mainly used away from home for the 1st, but plan on using it at home for the 2nd when they need to be in separate rooms for naps, etc. I really enjoy the pack 'n plays versatility. We bought a cheap highchair and got a booster as a gift. We don't have a lot of space, so if I had to do over I would have just used the booster. The high chair is now at grandma and grandpa's. One last thing - although I love all the baby contraptions, swings, jumperoo's, excersaucers, etc. (we got them all as hand-me-downs and gifts) my most useful item has been the bouncy chair. They are inexpensive and I use mine all the time. It gives you a place to put down baby before they can sit up and they can still see around the room. We move ours all over the house, wherever we go, kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom. Great for when you need to take a shower. Most come with a toy bar and vibration. Phew! Sorry this was so long! :)

  • i bought a bassinet but my son would only sleep in his crib so it was a waste of monet

  • For my first two, we used the crib in the babies room. But, due to space and the other ages of my older two, my third baby has been in our room since we brought her home. At first she was in a bassinet and is now a pack and play with a bassinet in it. I must admit, I am hooked. I love that I can check on her at random. I love that when I am in my room in the morning I get to see her stretch and wake. Then, the best part...her smile. I get it first thing! Also, when she first came home, she was in a stand alone bassinet right next to the bed. Some nights all it took to calm her was to put my hand on her belly. As I said, I am hooked on having her in the room.

Lori on 2/10/2009 at 12:09 PM
  • My husband and I didn't want anything super expensive and planned on having our son sleep in his crib from the get-go, but as a backup plan, we found an inexpensive moses basket on craigslist ($20!). I ended up having an emergency c-section and once we got home, the only place I could sleep that was even sort of comfortable was the couch. There was no way I could get off the couch each time my son needed feeding, plus I could barely pick him up, so he slept in the moses basket next to the couch. He went to his crib as soon as I was able to move around better. So like you said, what works for one may not work for another (or by necessity in our case!).

Melody on 2/10/2009 at 12:01 PM
  • We have a pack and play and used that to put baby down for naps, since she sleeps in bed with us. It also comes in handy for "alone" time when DH and I need the bed to ourselves :). Plus I can drag it anywhere else in the house since it has wheels, whether I'm the kitchen, living room or wherever and I want to be sure baby is by me.

Jennifer on 2/10/2009 at 12:00 PM
  • You have such a great outlook- see what works and be willing to change depending on the little one's likes/dislikes. My first child did not like a swing and 15 months later my 2nd baby LOVES the swing (borrowed from a friend). We also used the pack n' play bassinet/changing table in the middle of the night. Word of advice- have some crib savers and use them for diaper changes too! They work well because super absorbant.

Brooke on 2/10/2009 at 11:05 AM
  • With my first child, I bought EVERYTHING!! We had the $$ and I wanted to be prepared. Of course, I realize now that we did not need everything like I thought. But now that I am frugal and have my 3rd, it sure helps! The things that I felt that are ESENTIAL for baby are: a pack-n-play (this can be used instead of a crib), one thing (swing, bouncer, ect) to put baby down in, and a boppy (I have 2 now). One last bit of advice... buy USED!! It is so much cheeper and your baby doesn't care if it is outdated!

Melanie on 2/10/2009 at 10:59 AM
  • We didn't use a traditional bassinet for our first child either--we did, however, make good use of the bassinet feature of our pack n play. You may find that when your baby is very tiny, the smaller space (in addition to swaddling) may make him/her feel more secure. We tried to have our son sleep in the crib from the-get go, but the crib was just too large and he had a much more difficult time sleeping in it. Having him sleep in the bassinet part of the pack-n-play was much more for his comfort than our convenience! All babies are different, and maybe yours will do just fine! It's good, though, that you have options. And keep the bassinet option in mind if she/he doesn't seem to be sleeping very well in the crib when still a newborn. It might very well just be the "openness" of the space. Good luck!
