Baby Clothing

Posted on 2/3/2009 by Denise

Only about 5 weeks to go and I have been getting ready for Judah’s arrival! I guess I have gone into “nesting” mode. Lately, I’ve been washing and drying, washing and drying clothes. This is because besides love, milk, and a dry diaper, I know he’ll need something to wear when he gets here. Well being a frugal blogger and soon to be mama I hope you’d expect nothing less than a post about how to cloth your baby for less!

There are a couple of ways that I’ve acquired clothes for my little one on the way.  First, my motto is get it cheap – only if you can’t get it for free! So here’s a few ways you can do just that.

Of course, if you are newly expecting mom you are going to have a baby shower or two, or three, or four…and your guests will love to buy baby clothes, they are just so darn cute!  However, most of these clothes are going to be the wee ones that they’ll outgrow in no time. So, it is good to have some other tricks up your sleeves.

First, don’t overlook hand-me-downs.  Just because it isn’t brand new doesn’t mean it isn’t good.  This is especially true for baby clothes.  They wear them for such a short time they often still LOOK brand new.  First, think about who you know that has recently had a baby.  Often, they are glad to give you items they no longer need, especially if they aren’t planning to expand their family any further.  This is one way I’ve gotten a closet full of clothes!  I have several friends who have had children before me and we’re happy to share their resources, all I had to do was ask!

One reason why people overlook hand-me-downs is because they may have stains. Formula stains are tough, and often clothes you get may have stains that have been set in (washed and dried). Many people would just toss them out without a second thought. WAIT! There is still hope! Recently, my mom and I rescued several adorable outfits. All you need is a little Biz. Of course, it is always good to treat a stain immediately, but if you’ve received some items that already have set in stains, here’s what you can do:

  1. Pre-treat the stain (there are several out there: Shout, Zout, Spray N Wash, etc).
  2. Run the washer with hot water and Biz and leave the clothes to soak (stop the cycle)
  3. Periodically, come back to the washer and scrub difficult stains. Do this several times while clothes are soaking.
  4. Leave the clothes to soak for the better part of a day – or even over night
  5. Finish the wash cycle and then check the clothes for stains.
  6. If the stain is gone then it is safe to dry them. If the stain is still there, repeat the process again.

Sign up for Freepeats.  This is a website that you can give away and get gently used baby stuff. You sign up to be a member of a group in your area and then trade away! You can give away stuff you don’t need anymore as your baby outgrows it, and get stuff you do need from other people in your network. The cost is $4.95 for a lifetime membership.

Another great way to score some cheap baby clothes is to visit consignment shops or consignment sales.  There are bound to be several in your community. You can also sign up to be notified of when consignment sales are happening in your area with some big consignment sales, like “Just Between Friends.”

Your last resort is to purchase clothing yourself. And, even then, there are ways to get your baby some clothes on the cheap! First, shop the sales. Many stores have email lists. They are more than happy to put you on their email list to notify you of when their sales are and often they may send you coupons or discounts as well! If you shop online, there are always coupon codes to be had for most of your big retailers. All it takes is a little searching. I have several links on my other blog www.thecentsiblesawyer.com that can help you with this search. Check your local discount retailers like Walmart – and don’t forget the clearance racks!

  • Just found your blog a few days ago. I am expecting a baby in June. It is our third girl and since my other girls are two and four luckily we really don't need many clothes, although the season is a little different so I have been having fun looking at or local thrift shop. I also found her nursery dresser and bookshelf at the thrift store and will be freshening it up with some paint.

  • Thanks for the advice! I also love the children's place for baby clothes. If you sign up for their mailing list, they send you coupons that you can combine with sales, of course! I get clothes and shoes there for way cheaper than garage sale clothes! I am talking like $2 max for shoes, for example! Hehe... I love that store!

  • I am a blog reader and wanted to check over here. One of my favorite $ saving ideas is to get a group of Moms (from your neighborhood, church, family, etc) and do clothes swaps. Ask people to bring a bag of clothes their kiddos don't fit in and have fun trading. It's free and kind of fun too!

  • Hand-me-downs were a LIFESAVER. I had a friend who gave me a ton of premie clothes. She had a really small baby, but since I was measuring large, I thought I'd never use them. Even though my baby was 8lbs, I still needed the premie clothes for the first month or so. I was so thankful for those, because all of the 0-3 mos clothes swallowed her whole! Best of Luck to you on the best day of your life! :)

  • Great article - thanks for posting it and best wishes! You mentioned Just Between Friends in your article and I have to agree that they are one of the greatest places to get great things for your children. I think they have over 75 sale locations in the U.S., so hopefully no one is too far from a Just Between Friends. I save TONS of money buying great things for my son there, and when he outgrows them, I just sell them and make more money back with them than I could other places. It's a great way that moms are helping other moms - and I love being part of the one in Fort Worth, Texas. Check out their website www.jbfsale.com and see if one is near you. Most of them have their Spring sales coming up in the next few weeks, so don't miss this great place to shop and sell! I'm getting my shopping list ready right now for all the goodies I need that I can get at 25%-30% of original cost...or LESS! Good Luck, Mommies!

  • This is so true. I have clothed both my boys with hand me downs and garage sale cloths for little to no money. Even the cloths with stains can become play cloths. And little boys need a lot of play cloths. Good luck in the adventure of mothering a son.

  • We got so many baby clothes from baby showers and gifts and most people did buy small, but we had some savvy moms who bought bigger for us, up to a year! The only items I have bought for our little guy has been at major clearance sales after the holidays. I have bought from 12 months on up (even 5T) and have rarely paid more than $2 an item. I'm hoping to continue to shop like this and plan ahead. Good luck with the washing, oh how I remember. You're smart in doing it before, no time after the babe is born..

  • When Sally was a baby a nurse at the peditricians office told me to get out "poop" stains by putting 1/2 cup Clorox II in the wash and to cfollow with 1 cup of white vinegar in the final rinse to cut the chances of any skin irritation for the baby. This really worked well for me although it wounds like you and your Mom have got the stain thing all in hand. Love you and can't wait until the 50's theme shower.

  • Dont forget clearance...even the best stores do that...gymboree and baby gap, my faves

  • I LOVE shopping consignment for my little ones. I love getting more for my money that way...especially shoes and character and boutique apparel.

    Kim F. on 2/4/2009 at 9:39 AM
  • Just a note-- if you receive new clothing, DO NOT wash it until you are ready for baby to wear it. Many times Baby grows so quickly that you do not get to everything. When this occurs, you can simply return the item to the store or use if as a gift for an expectant mother.

  • I totally reccomend hand me downs----if for nothing else than for play clothes! My friend's son is 6 years older than mine and the clothes she gives me from her son aren't always in style right now----however----an open mind and maybe mixing and matching with clothes i buy for really cheap makes it work! Always give lots of thanks for the clothes received and more will come... :D Now, if only I could find a great friend to give clothes for my little 1 yr old girl. hmmm. Great blog denise-------your home blog is what got me started with coupon shopping! I'll forever be greatful and my budget thanks you too!
