Stockpiling

Posted on 1/12/2009 by Denise

This week I am going to talk about one of my favorite topics, stockpiling.  As a frugal blogger I talk a lot about stockpiling groceries, cleaning products, laundry detergent, and personal care.  But, as a soon to be new mommy I have been stockpiling diapers and baby care items as well, and you can too!  When we found out we would be adding a new member to our household I began my stockpile.  There are lots of things you can stockpile ahead of time.  Obviously a baby is going to go through a lot of diapers and diapers are one of the most costly items you will purchase – ongoing!  So, if you plan to use disposable diapers then you can definitely start your stockpile early.  Other items that are safe to stockpile early are wipes, baby body wash, lotion, as well as other “bath” items.  Some things I don’t recommend stockpiling too early are baby formula and food.  These items have a shorter shelf life, so starting your stockpile on these items before the baby is actually here is not recommended.

The one thing I wasn’t sure about when I started my stockpile is what size diaper I should be stockpiling.  What I have done is just bought several different sizes and then when I put them away in the closet I stack them up by like size.  Really, you can’t go wrong because you can always exchange an unopened package for a different size later, that is IF you have extras!

If you are new to the idea of stockpiling it is really very simple.  The idea behind it is that you purchase items that you need or will use while they are at rock bottom prices.  Even better is when you can purchase these items while they are at rock bottom prices AND you can match it with a money-saving coupon!

How can you find out when these things are at rock bottom prices?  One way is to start your own price book.  Keep track of what items you saw, where you saw it, and what its price was.  Once you have done this once a week for a month or so you will have a good idea of what a “good” price is.  Amy at MomAdvice has a great price book page that you can use to keep track with HERE.

An easier way to know when prices are at their best is to follow a few blogs that will give you the updates on your favorite stores.  There are a ton of money saving blogs out there.  One blog I like to watch that keeps me updated on when diapers are cheap is BabyCheapskate.  You can also check out my other blog, The “Cent”sible Sawyer; I keep my readers updated on where the deals can be had along with which coupons can be used to get products super cheap!  I try to include pictures and detailed info so that others can duplicate my savings.

I will warn you though, saving money can be addictive!  Once you start scoring great deals you might not be able to stop!

  • As a new mom, I realized that stockpiling was a good idea early on. So I went to Sam's and bought a large box of diapers for 40 dollars. Its a good deal because there are over 250 diapers per package and it covers sizes 1 and 2!! Considering a package of about 110 or so diapers for size 1 is about 20 bucks...this is a good deal! And they are huggies too!

  • Hey guys, I am loving the comments, advice, and varying opinions here! But, just so you know, this is a blog that is a place where moms like you can comment freely about your tips, advice, and what worked for you. Just remember, not everyone has the same opinion and what works for you might not necessarily work for others. Just as when I blog a new post, I hope you realize I am just sharing what I do ... no intention to sway you one way or another. Although, I do hope that what I have to say will help you save money and live better... you've got to do what feels right to you! :) Denise The "Cent"sible Sawyer

  • I stockpiled diapers and regretted it. My daughter was born too big to wear the newborn diapers, so I had a ton I couldn't use. Then, she ended up to be allergic to them and I had to buy her special diapers. Since big babies and skin allergies DO NOT run in my family, it was a shocker for us.

  • as the mom of two, I generally recommend the exact opposite when it comes to things like diapers and bottles, etc. Different brands fit different babies differently, including bottle nipples. You might find that you think it's worth an extra $2 or $3 to buy a specific brand. My second son was quite large, and the newborn size was too small for him right off. He started in size 1/2's. Even the bath products... you just never know about sensitive skin, etc. I'm sorry to say it, but this article really is not good advice for anyone. I hope you have good luck with all of the items/brands you've stockpiled so far.

  • Hey there, I love your blog and am a loyal follower. My daughter will be one in a couple of weeks so I have gotten a lot of diaper and wipe experience over the past year. My advice that I am offering is, GO WITH PAMPERS DIAPERS AND HUGGIES WIPES. Pampers diapers are SO absorbent, and with that newborn poop that is so watery you will really want them. All Huggies diapers that we ever used leaked out every time. Huggies wipes are a lot more durable, the pampers wipes (especially the sensitive ones) don't wipe real well and tear apart. Good luck!

  • I agree with some of the others regarding the sizes. Also, I hope you are happy with the brand that you're buying. Cheaper isn't always better and there can be a big difference with the quality of diapers (I'm talking about leaks). It's not worth it if you have to change the baby's outfit every time you change a diaper. Congratulations to you and enjoy this time in your life!

  • One thing I don't recommend to stockpile is training pants (pull-ups). During my college years I worked as a 2 year old teacher and had the oppurtunity to potty train lots of kiddos. I found that the parents who brought in pull-ups were wasting their money because the pull-ups are more expensive and have less in a pack and don't really work as well as you would think. The main reason is most children who are at the potty training stage just don't have the dexterity to pull up and down those tight pull-ups easily in time to make it to the bathroom. Also, if an accident occurs then you have to pull off everything, sometimes even socks and shoes to put on a new one. I do recommend to stockpile "big kid underwear" instead. They are washable, reusable, and a confidence booster. Also, they are easier to get on and off and children definately know if they have had an accident(not always the case with a training pant). Although, you won't really need this tip for a long while it is one that will save lots of money when the time comes!

  • Hey Denise! Well, I have a bit of a different idea for stockpiling -- one that will help you and hubs a lot in the first couple of months. When I was preggers with #3, I knew I wouldn't have any meals coming my way from family or friends. And I had 2 children, plus hubs, plus me to feed dinner. About 3 weeks before I was due, I planned and cooked about two solid weeks (14-15) of easy-freeze-easy-reheat dinners. I made a list of what I'd frozen for each dinner and stuck it on the door of our freezer. When I pulled a dinner, I'd cross it off the list. It helped me immensely, especially since my third was a world-class screamer (still is!) and my other two are world-class eaters (still are!). Bottom line (no pun intended!): Don't forget to stockpile and plan for yourself, too, when baby is coming. Take care!

  • Don't forget to try breastfeeding and then you won't need to buy any formula at all! Talk about frugal (and best for baby and mom, too!)!

  • I would recomend 1 or 2 packs of newborn, 4 or so of size 1, and 4 or so of size 2, then really pile on the 3's and 4's. It seemed to be the size my son was most it. We used far more 3's and 4's than the smaller sizes.

  • I too use Baby Cheapskate to get the best baby deals. This link: http://babycheapskate.blogspot.com/2007/02/using-growth-charts-to-predict-diaper.html Helps you predict how many diaperts you'll need for each size so that you can maximize your stockpile savings! Good luck :)

  • I totally love to stockpile! My husband calls it "The mini-mart in my attic". When we run out of something, I just go upstairs and get another one. http://mommyswishlist.blogspot.com/2008/11/lesson-four-how-to-be-coupon-mommy.html

  • If something is free or really cheap, i usually get it because I can give it away as a shower gift.

  • i am a veternan mommy we are now having our 10th. my suggestion when stockpiling diapers. 5 pks newborn diapers 7 pks of size 1 diapers 8 pks of size 2 and 20 pks of size 3. 20+ pks of size 4 diapers your child may grow at a different rate then mine did but if you stay in 1 size longer you will have plenty of time to know that you will need more. for my kids this lasts about 7 months worth. formula - most kids take a normal formula with iron but if your family(EVEN ONLY AS KIDS) is prone to allergies, lastose issues then you are more likely to need a different formula. but most start on similac advanced, enfamil wih iron, etc. also check with your dr some will trade formula with you should you buy it an allergies develop. also some stores will exchange it if you keep your receipt. check the stores. formula must have receipts when exchanged because it is often stolen to be mixed with illegal drugs.

  • My 2 kids didn't even stay in size 1's for longer than a month. I find it harder to find deals on training pants, you get less in a pack and pampers combines their coupons so when they come out you only get one coupon for easy ups or diapers. Also, babies use such a small amount of lotion or baby wash or baby shampoo that a bottle lasts forever. 5 bottles might last for 5 years!

  • Stockpiling is great! For the amount of money that you've spent on plastic diapers, you could have easily started a great cloth diaper stash! Cloth diapers are so much better for you baby, the planet, and your budget! Take a serious look at cloth diapers and you won't regret it!

Amy on 1/13/2009 at 2:07 PM
  • I would say to keep your receipts for your baby items. Designate a special envelope or file folder just for baby item receipts. That way if you need to return or exchange anything, it will be much easier.

MelRae on 1/13/2009 at 1:12 PM
  • We stockpiled diapers as well and then received a lot more diapers at showers and stuff. We had lots of pkgs of nb diapers that re-gifted nicely in a fun basket of baby essentials for baby showers of friends. So basically, stockpiling now is a win-win situation.

Melissa on 1/13/2009 at 12:25 PM
  • I stockpiled diapers before my little girl was born and I didn't need to buy diapers for her first four months. One thing I will warn you about... be careful about stockpiling the bath items. I did so and I now have a TON of soap and lotion that I can't use because my baby has really sensitive skin.

Crista on 1/13/2009 at 10:38 AM
  • Thanks for the tips! I need to start doing this soon since we are planning a pregnancy starting this summer (fingers crossed!). Also, I agree with you about not stockpiling formula. Some babies can't use certain types (my niece is allergic to Similac, for example) so you don't want to buy a bunch of formula that it turns out you can't use.

Taryn on 1/13/2009 at 10:16 AM
  • Great post! I LOVE my stockpile! :)

  • I also stockpiled diapers when I was pregnant. We had a closet full of diapers in a variety of sizes by the time my son was born. This was very nice to have all of the extra diapers, not only did I not have to worry about the weekly cost of diapers, but my son was born in January in the middle of a snow storm. I had no worries of being snowed in with no diapers!!!!! I probably saved 50% or more buying diapers only on sales and with coupons. The only advice I have is don't buy too many newborn diapers. Most babies only wear this size for a week or two.
