Baby Showers

Posted on 1/5/2009 by Denise

I had my first ever baby shower just a few weeks ago!  It was so much fun!  My fellow co-workers threw it for me.  I am a teacher at a local public school.  There are quite a few teachers at my school so we always go in together with our grade levels to purchase gifts.  That was great for me because I was able to get a few of the larger items on my registry!  I got a 3 in 1 walker (so cute, it looks like a car), the hamper that matches my baby's room, the pack and play, and my monitors.  I also got some other small items from my registry.

I was really worried about opening gifts in front of everyone.  I know that sounds funny, but I worry that I'll be making a weird face and communicate the wrong thing!  Or, that I won't say enough about how grateful I am for the gift!  It all worked out though.  Once the ball got rolling I was more comfortable opening the gifts with all eyes on me than I thought I would be!  And, as it usually is with a group of women, they were all chatting together anyway, so I didn't feel like I was being stared at!

I have a few more showers to go with other family and friends so hopefully I will start out with a good deal of things.  I love the tradition of throwing showers; it really helps when you are just starting out!  I have thrown several showers for friends in the past.  Actually, I just threw a baby shower for a good friend a few weeks ago.  I love decorating and getting all the favors and food.  For this particular friend we did brunch and I handmade the invitations saying, "Join us for eggs and a 'toast.'”  We toasted the new arrival with mimosas and sparkling orange juice.

At another shower I threw this year we did a "whine and cheese" party.  We invited couples for an evening shower.  My husband and I got so many compliments about this shower.  The guys were a little leery at first about being at a baby shower, but they had as much fun as the women did (if not more!).  We had the guests bring a favorite bottle of wine to share (if they chose to) and I served a cheese platter along with some other yummy appetizers.  We had non-alcoholic (sparkling) beverages as well.  The expecting couple opened the gifts and then each of the guests said a prayer over the anticipated arrival.

I would love to hear your ideas and themes for showers you've thrown or had thrown for you.  Be sure to visit the question and answer section and share your ideas!  Also, to see pictures of my shower visit my other blog at www.thecentsiblesawyer.blogspot.com

  • answers to your questions, denise: 1. i have had many diaper bags... let's say 20 or so ;) My all time favoritie is the Reese Li diaper bag. You can see everything that's in your bag... you can easily access anything at all times and you can wipe the diaper bag down with a wet cloth.... super sanitary, right? 2. We have the prince lionheart version of the bumbo and we LOVE IT! I would definately get this version over the old standby ;)

  • Hey girl, Judah's nursery looks amazing!!! I love the reading nook and the corner where you have the changing table. It is so nice that the changing table doesn't take up a wall. I want to know how you did the mural above the nook. I want to do something in Addi's bathroom but don't want to pay money for the stick on letters.

  • Oh, Denise - you're so cute! I completely understand your hesitation about opening gifts - I was the same way! I'm glad you got several things you'll need!

  • My 2 cents on your questions: 1. We have bought/been given about 3 diaper bags. Right now I am using the free one the hospital gives you. We've never gone out and bought an expensive one so I can't really say if it is worth it. 2. We have met families at a park to celebrate the new arrival (where we have a picnic meal and cake-really simple). This is great for those with many children and you still get to have a celebration for the new baby. The kids can play and have fun and the adults can talk! 3. We were given a bumbo that we use with baby #3 & it has come in handy by bringing it with us to houses that may not be baby-ready. We can feed baby in it when we don't have a highchair. We did do w/o one for the 1st 2 so I would say it is not a must have. I would look for a used one on craigslist so they clean up nice and they don't get much wear one them.

  • I love my bumbo (? asked on other post) it is now on DD #2. We got the tray for it. It makes it really nice cause DD can sit up in it, have her toys reachable and be part of the family!
