A Baby in the City?

Posted on 3/9/2009 by Kelly

What happens when a fun loving city gal in her mid 30's and her husband of five years finally get pregnant? They realize they know absolutely nothing about raising a child and do everything they can to plan and prepare; which is why I am now talking to you fine folks.

Hi my name is Kelly, and I am expecting my first child this August. Luckily, I’ve been working at Walmart.com for the past year and a half which has afforded me this amazing opportunity to contribute to the baby buzz blog. I'm very excited to share my experiences with the community, but more importantly, I could really use your thoughts and advice as my only experience to date comes from a half dozen baby books and some advice from friends. Not only am I a new mom, but it has been almost 20 years since I attempted to change a diaper and without your help I might possibly diaper the wrong end.

Not only are my husband and I new to the world of child rearing but as city dwellers we have other things we need to consider as well. First living in the city can be expensive and with a kid on the way my husband and I are trying to optimize our budget buy eating out less, comparing prices as well as cutting out “nice to haves”. Secondly city living generally doesn't provide as much space as the suburbs therefore we need to be smart about the products we purchase in order to maximize our living space. We enjoy living in a busy city because it allows us to be close to work and only blocks from a grocery store. However since both my husband and I were raised in suburban households we are still struggling to envision what it looks like to raise a child in a multi-unit building without a yard not to mention the fact that our child will probably never be able to walk to and from school.

I am doing my best to be a smart shopper not only to save money but to do my part to save the planet by conserving resources. Even though I am sure I won't be able to resist every adorable baby item for sale in the retail stores I am hopeful that I can secure several good items second hand from the web or friends.

Even though dogs outnumber kids in San Francisco I still have to believe that it will be an amazing place to raise a child (once I know what I am doing). I can't wait to hear your advice as well as answer your questions as I prepare for this important journey.

  • My wife and I have 3 young children and 2 wonderful dogs. To help acclimate the dogs to our children; I brought home the towels the baby was wrapped in while they were in the hospital. I placed the towels in the dog’s bed and gave them an opportunity to collect the scent. By the time our children arrived home, the dogs were adjusted and familiar with our new family member.

  • Kelly I am in agreement with Stacy A (3/11@5:31pm) and Lindy (3/10 @5:33pm) LOVE and your enjoyment of this personal journey with your husband and new child will be locked in the data back of your mind for your entire life and you can pull it up every time you want a little joy or BIG laugh, we all make mistakes the trick is to try, try and try again untill we get it right then move on to the next step in the journey. This is what I was trying, in my poor way of bloging, to share from my heart. Your child will teach you this as you watch them grow(learning to walk with the coaching of Grandma and grandpa is a good example, nothing is the same once a child becomes mobile.) to be wonderful, loving, persons like, if not better than, yourself. That I believe is why we love the reproduction system ,something better always is produced. But then again it could we need help with our daily chores and many hands make joyous work! • I think you are very lucky not to have been already bombarded by a ton of advice. It usually seems that as soon as people find out you're pregnant, they want to tell you the right way to do every little thing. The best advice I ever received was to enjoy it, and listen to yourself. You will quickly grow to know every little detail of your baby and be a wonderful mother. There are always those "what ifs" but babies aren't little long enough to worry if everything little thing is perfect. I had an August baby too (who's now going on 4). Congrats & I look forward to reading more posts from you!

  • Lili - Because it's a blog (and they want to keep it honest) no one at Walmart edits the content prior to it being published. I have been trying to improve my writing ability over the last several years - but as you pointed out - it still needs work :) I am naturally embarrassed. I would love for my child to be able to read these postings one day and know I was doing everything possible to prepare for them. To think that I could be an embarrassment to my child, or the company that employs me, pains me greatly. I am hopeful the opportunity to contribute to this blog will allow me to improve on multiple levels. Thanks again for the feedback. Not only will I continue to try and approve my writing ability I will see what I can do about having someone read my postings prior publishing.

  • We didn't have much with our first for budgetary reasons. The bouncer, activity center, whatever you want to call it, was AWESOME! It's how I got my teeth brushed once both my kids became mobile. I wish I had the Boppy for both kids. It's great for feeding and just holding the baby. My husband and I both loved our Boppy. I totally agree with buying on an as needed basis. That way if the product doesn't work for your child, you can exchange it for another. My kids both HATED their swings. We ended up just returning them. Yard sales and church rummage sales were awesome for finding clothes and toys for my boys. I found many luxury baby items that way we wouldn't have been able to afford otherwise.

  • I have teens now but have fond memories of the baby years. One thing for certain is those years do fly by. It sometimes feels that you are never going to be "normal" again but really relief will come as they grow. Point being, don't take the hardships too serioulsy because as they grow the good memories take over. This to shall pass are words to live by. Being overprepared is stressful and may lead to feeling guilty for not knowing or having everything YOU think you amy need. Remeber they are babies and all they need is love clean diapers and food at first. The rest is an evolution and that journey is taken as a family. It certainly is wonderous.

  • This is just asuggestion from the statements in your article and some of the comments. The daily progam you are presently living with your husband is going to change, even before the baby is born. The best thing you can do is be adapatable and flexable ,where you can, try to stay relaxed and CALM IN YOUR THOUGHTS.Your health and wellbeing and that of your mate and child will be better when you can think of good positive thoughts in all situations,The only real control any human has is what they chose to think at any one moment, there by feeling how they what to feel not how their present enviroment is directing them to chose to feel."Your Potentialities are a great deal better than anyone ever permitted you to believe" LRH Patrick & Riely the GOJI Bear

  • Hi Kelly. This a great blog, but there are a lot of grammar mistakes in it. I think Walmart should get you an editor. I didn't want you to be embarrassed.

  • I currently have an 8 month old, my 4th child. My must have item, which wasn't around for my other babies, is the Bumbo seat! Best baby product I've encountered over the last 8 years by far! With the tray (sold separately) it is wonderful!

  • Being a mom will be the most wonderful exciting journey of your life. I often think about stories from grandparents and how they spoke of the way they raised their children on very little "material" things. The basic gift of love and time are priceless. This is what stays with you forever. Congratulations!

  • I remember the snuggly was very handy, and a 4 year old name Kelly who wanted to carry her baby cousin around in it. They allow you hands free, keep the baby close and warm. Great for taking walks in the windy city! Loved your article!

  • Hi Kelly, Congrats to you and your husband! As a mother of two, I'm no expert by any means, but I'm sure you'll be able to find the right end of the baby to diaper in no time. We raised our son in a city during his first year of life and he's turning out just fine so far. I admit that we have moved to the suburbs since then. The first couple of years won't be too hard to do in the city. Good luck to you both and I look forward to hearing more about your pregnancy.

  • Wow a chance to offer my suggestions to a set of expecting parents, great concept, but it is to be considered as just my advice. The reason I say that is from my experence the is no real way , right way, to raise a child other than common right and wrong thinking for the time and enviroment. Example: when the child awakes at three in the morning what could be the reason? The child was physcialy and mentaly tired four hours ago as you were too. Now that the child has your attention take a moment to be calm and listen, try to identify by the sounds you here before you get up to respond. If you can try and feel the enviroment and deside what you can do to change the situation for everyones satification. The next step is the trickest, you must be calm and fully aware of what you are about to do. Should the child be dreaming it would not be good to turn on the lights and awake the child totally,be calm think why is the child distribed, the child is breathing or the cry would not be heard. What if there is no cry? Could it be you are the restless one who has awaken the child? Now to my advice, do what your parents did, be attentive and compasionate, most of all loving to yourself and your mate and never go to sleep upset or place the child to sleep when when you are upset. Should the child be upset GOOD LUCK WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF PARENTHOOD! Trying to place yourselves and the child in the most pleasent mood before you retire, this can be done by being grateful for a wonderful day doing what ever you did to physcialy and mentaly drain your self. This used to be call bedtime prayers. I presently call it going over all the things I woke up being grateful for and compareing that to what I did accomplish during the day and Looking forward to what tomorow will bring to educate me even more. Prepare yourself you are in for a great education from your child! Patrick & Riely the GOJI Bear.

  • Here's my top advice (from a new Dad's perspective) Take the full 3-4 weeks off before you have the baby. You might think you can work up to the last day but those last weeks quickly become a challenge and you'll be grateful for all the time you had to relax before the next 2 years of sleepless nights. As for buying gear and toys, my best advice would be to buy things on an as-needed basis. Kids grow fast and each child's needs are different. No sense storing a bunch of stuff you won't need for another 6 months. Also, if you can bear it try and buy used, or buy from other parents in your company network. Otherwise, good luck! This is going to be the greatest experience ever :)
